Anti-aging Strategies: Pick One!

Anti-aging strategies are in constant flux. Thanks to ongoing research efforts and generous funding from skin care companies, people are beginning to discover that people can turn back the time. The changes and developments in anti-aging strategies are turning a whole nation of baby boomers into very conscious, very meticulous, and very discriminating users of anti-aging formulas and techniques.

How can you miss it? Everyday the papers announce news of "revolutionary", "miracle", "never before seen" anti-aging products that send every middle-aged housewife (including teenagers barely out of their teens) to the dermatological suite.

Dr. David J. Leffell is a Yale University professor of Dermatology. In his book, Total Skin (Hyperion, 2000), he discusses various ways of anti-aging strategies. Avoiding the sun's rays between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm is an effective way to ward off premature skin aging. Daily use of moisturizers and creams is also a healthy practice. Proper nutrition and regular exercise are another.

Free radicals can also wreck havoc in our skin. An increasing number of people are taking generous doses of vitamins and minerals to compensate for their less than perfect nutrition.

Dr. Leffell says that there are four things we can do to prevent wrinkles:

1. Practice good sun protection
2. Quit smoking
3. Get plenty of rest
4. Keep your skin well moisturized

Let's not forget that there's always the option of surgery (so we can love ourselves again when we look at the mirror in the morning), although modern medicine has come up with an incredible number of alternative procedures that are less invasive, and less expensive.

One thing is sure: there's an anti-aging skin care cosmetics for every budget, for every skin type. We'd be cheating our skin if we didn't give it some TLC (tender loving care).
